West of Scotland
Orthopaedics
Training Programme
The West of Scotland T&O training programme offers entry at ST1 for run-through training (8 years) and directly at ST3 (6 years). Both routes of entry are via the national selection process and the number of places varies from year to year.
Training is delivered through placements at centres such as Glasgow Royal Infirmary and the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, in addition to district general hospitals throughout Clyde, Ayrshire, Lanarkshire, Forth Valley and Dumfries & Galloway.
The training programme offers access to the entire orthopaedic syllabus, both in terms of sub-specialty interests and provides a strong grounding in orthopaedic trauma. The development of a Major Trauma Network is underway and the region will see significant in the next few years.

Trainees are encouraged and supported to undertake research during their training. There is a strong emphasis on teaching and there is compulsory formal regional teaching (ST3+) on a weekly basis during ‘term time’. Focusing on preparation for the FRCS, it is delivered by local and invited guest speakers.
